There is one BIG problem that comes with being self-employed, especially as an illustrator. For TAX purposes you have to keep complete records of every commission, and keep records of every expediture you make that includes supplies, equipment, travel mileage, tolls, etc. etc. etc. And I hate that bookkeeping stuff!
So, at the very beginning of my art career I asked my wife to do it. Much to my surprise she seemed pleased that I asked her. But as time went by I was not pleased about how she went about keeping the records. I noticed her jotting things down in spiral bound notebooks in a variety of sizes, or on loose pieces of paper, and eventually I suggested "nicely" that she get a ledger. God knows where she kept receipts, or even if she did!
But, I thought, really, what are the odds of the IRS auditing me, probably a million to one! And I didn't want to upset her by telling her how to keep the records, she might give the job back to me! So, things went on her way and I happily went on drawing and painting pictures, for years and years and years.
And then one day I received a letter, and my heart stopped! It was from the DEPARTMENT OF THE TREASURY, UNITED STATES INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE, I was going to be AUDITED!
Good Lord, I thought, I'm headed for the Pen and I'll be 125 when I get out! Or, I'll have to pay a heavy penalty, a huge fine that will empty my bank account! Oh, the shame of it!
